Daniel Raye, or Danny, had been lounging around all afternoon. He had just finished a genealogy report for a very prominent member of society, and was waiting for Quinn to show up to retrieve it. There was a knock at the door, so Danny, thinking it was Quinn, picked up the report to hand it over. As he opened the door, the cutest twin boys stood there. They were dressed as ninjas, one with red ties, and the other with blue. "Trick or treat," they said in unison.
Danny reached over and grabbed a candy dish. As the first boy reached to grab a piece of candy, the dish spoke, "Who is that stealing my candy?"
The boys jumped back, grabbing their toy weapons, and causing Danny to chuckle. "It's alright boys, go ahead and grab two each for giving me a chuckle."
All night long, kids rang Danny's door bell. Many jumped from the dish talking, and Danny amused himself watching their reactions. Danny had an enjoyable night, but was bothered by the fact that Quinn hadn't showed up.
Quinn's family was the first family to settle in this small city up in the foot hills of Southern California. During Danny's research, he thought that he had seen Quinn in images, many times. Some of the images were nearly two hundred years old, so he knew it wasn't possible, but those eyes looked as mesmerizing as they are today. Still, how could it possibly be Quinn in those photos? According to records Danny had discovered, Quinn was only twenty years of age. When Quinn asked Danny personally to do this report, offering to pay him handsomely, Danny felt compelled. When Quinn smiled, there was no way Danny could refuse, even if he wanted.
It was almost midnight and Danny was shutting off lights when the doorbell rang. Trick or Treat had been over for hours, leaving only one candy left in the dish, a Reese's peanut butter cup. Danny opened the door and there was Quinn, dressed entirely in black. "I was worried about you when you didn't show up earlier," Danny averred.
"Sorry to cause you to worry, but I was a bit busy. I think we had at least a thousand kids come to our door tonight, and I didn't want to leave Leonard and Ashton to deal with them alone."
"And how is your brother and his husband?" Danny inquired.
"Lenny is working on a new book, his fifth I believe, and Ash is doing the graphics for it," Quinn responded.
"It must seem weird having a brother who is thirty-six years older than you, I couldn't even begin to imagine."
"Lenny has been a great brother, he has always treated me special. Maybe it's because of him that I find older guys so attractive." There Quinn did it, he gave Danny his smile that melts polar ice caps.
"If only I wasn't so much older," Danny bemoaned.
Quinn placed a hand on Danny's shoulder and said, "You are not too old. I find you very attractive."
Taken aback a bit, Danny whispered, "Thank you. I've been attracted to you since the day we met."
"Danny, you know more about me and my family than most anyone. I'm sure you've seen me in many photos…"
"Well, I've seen ancestors that looks a lot like you," Danny stated.
Quinn shook his head, "No, those aren't ancestors. I am really two hundred seventy-five years old. See, I am a vampire."
Danny thought Quinn was just having fun with it being Halloween. He asked, "So how old are Lenny and Ash, really?"
"Dad turned them a few years ago when we were on vacation. The records you found on them are their actual records."
"And yours were faked?" Danny asked.
"Hey, when you are eternally twenty, you have to adjust the records on occasion." There was that smile again. Danny didn't know if Quinn was delusional or just having fun for the holiday. "If I may, Danny, I'd love to spend eternity with you. I have never met a man I like as much as you."
"Quinn," Danny started, "I would love to spend the rest of my life with you. The more I discovered about your family, the more I like you."
Then Quinn surprised Danny and bit him on the neck. Danny slipped into a deep sleep as his body took on immortality.
